On the Wine Side - Finding Wines for Thanksgiving

Wed, Nov 19, 2025

With its focus on family, friends, and food, Thanksgiving has to be one of the best holidays ever. I certainly think so. And if you're going to host or attend a Thanksgiving feast, choosing wines to complement the various dishes that find their way to the table at all times of day doesn't need to be a challenge you don't feel up for. It can actually be fun.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by wine options for Thanksgiving, make your way to our Customer Service desk at the front of the store. On the shelves right next to it are a great selection of wines targeted to multiple food-pairing options. We have made signs based on what kinds of foods are typically served on Thanksgiving, and what the recommended wines are for them.

On the top shelf are wines that pair especially well with classic appetizers. For example, if you're looking for something to pair with a spinach-artichoke dip, the recommendation is a sparkling wine. There's a beautiful bottle of Louis Vallon Cremant de Bourgougne bubbly for that.

If you serve or bring hummus with veggies, a great wine to pair with that is Sauvignon Blanc. How about the Fog Mountain Sauvignon Blanc from California? It's there.

If you have cheeses, chips, charcuterie, a bit of everything, the recommendation is a dry rose. The Savoie Rose is a lovely, elegant selection. There are many others, including a Savory & James sherry that, as the sign says, is the perfect pairing for anything salty.

On the middle shelf are wines that pair especially well with what is served as the main course at Thanksgiving - turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, sweet potatoes, green beans....you get the idea. Here you'll find bottles of the Maiden Hair Pinot Noir - a beautiful Pinot from the Willamette Valley - the Clean Slate Riesling from Mosel, Germany; a Gewurtztraminer from Swedish Hill in the Finger Lakes; the Chateau D'Haurets Rose; the Granite Hill Old Vines Zinfandel; and even a Fiano from Sicily - among others! Always a winner for Thanksgiving dinner is the Beaujolais Nouveau. We have you covered!

On the third shelf are wines that pair with different desserts, most notably pumpkin, apple and pecan pies, but also cheesecake and, of course, chocolate desserts. This shelf is loaded with fun dessert wines, including the Jamesport Glace from Long Island, Brotherhood's Late Harvest Riesling, the Sandeman Madeira, a Cranberry Wine from Tomasello (a real treat!), the Verga Prosecco, and - cheating but worth including - Grand Marnier. And lots of others.

The tags that tell you about the pairing suggestions are really fun to read and will give you great ideas. Go with the wines we've suggested, or search out ones you like based on the information provided. And don't forget, when you mix and match 6 or more of any of the "Green Tag Gems," you save an additional 10%.
